  • Specification of the GIFT interface sent to Anthon Astrom (Marko Niinimaki, done)

Internal meeting 2 Nov. 2011, 14:00 - 15:00, UNIGE

Presents : Nicolas Ray (unige), Thierry Froideveaux (unige), Christian Herold (unige), Mohamed Ben Belgacem (HES-SO), Nabil Abdennadher (HES-SO),

Agenda:

  • Presentation of the "Cyclone track" application: Architecture overview
  • Infrastructure : How to connect the 60 machines provided by EnriroSpace Lab?

First face-to-face meeting 9.11.2011 at hepia

Present: Nabil Abdennadher, Nicolas Ray, Julie Harboe, Gregory Giuliani and Christian Herold

  • 11:00 - 11:15 : Introduction & reminder of the project : WPs, milestones and planning
  • 11:15 - 12:00 : "Envirospace" Application
  • 12:00 - 12:30 : Discussion
  • 12:30 - 13:30 : Lunch
  • 13:30 - 14:15 : "HSLU" (Smartpen) application
  • 14:15 - 14:45 : Discussion

Introduction

  • The project started on 1st October 2011 (1 month delay). Its duration is 15 months
  • AAA/Switch projects end on 31 December 2012. There is no possibility to delay the project after this date

Cyclone track application:

  • The jobs submitted to XWCH are composed of two steps. The output of Step 1 is used as input data of Step 2. Size of Input data : few KBytes. Data are sent with the job. Jobs do not need to access database
  • The workflow of the application is generated by GANGA
  • One of the goals of MUSIC is to develop a plugin to allow GANGA submit jobs to XWCH. A meeting will be scheduled soon with the GANGA team (CERN) in order to decide if this objective is feasible
  • An XWCH tutorial will be scheduled soon to allow Evirospace team start programming with XWCH

"Smartpen" application

  • Specification of the application should be clarified asap
  • A meeting will be scheduled soon at Lucern to:
    • define the specifications of the application to gridify : should we take into account parameters such as sound?
    • study the possibility to connect local infrastructure from HSLU to the XWCH platform

Action points:

  • Set up a meeting with GANGA about GANGA-XWCH (Done, date: 30.11. 2011, at CERN)

Meeting with GANGA developers at CERN 30.11.2011

Purpose: evaluate the feasibility and effort needed to make XWCH work as a plugin for GANGA.

Present: Marko Niinimaki (HEPIA), Nicolas Ray, Gregory Giuliani (UNIGE), Ivan Antoniev Dzhunov, Michael Kenyon, Łukasz Kokoszkiewicz (CERN)

Discussion:

Nicolas Ray and Marko Niinimaki introduced the MUSIC project and the idea of using GANGA as a workflow engine for the distributed Cyclone Track application. Nicolas mentioned that Cyclone Track has already been re-written using an open source GIS package called GRASS, and that UNIGE is ready to test running it on XWCH. So the "missing piece" is XWCH/GANGA.

Details of the backend system were discussed. Ivan Dzhunov provided an example of creating a "dummy" back-end.

Action points:

  • Test/fix Ivan Dzhunov's dummy back-end (Marko, done)
  • Set up a meeting in January at UNIGE where Marko can advice UNIGE how to add the XWCH functionality in the function templates of the dummy back-end (done: meeting will be 23.1.2012).

XWCH demonstration/meeting at unige 1.12.2011

Present: Nabil Abdennadher, Marko Niinimaki (HEPIA), Matthias Currat, Gregory Giuliani, Nicolas Ray (UNIGE)

The technical aspects of the XWCH platform were presented.

Action points:

  • Set up XWCH worker in the computers of EnvironLab (TBD).
  • Set a plan for having an "this worker can execute only these types of jobs" functionality.

Art task meeting at HSLU, Luzern, 22.2.2012

Present: J. Harboe, A. Alstrom, L. Zimmer (HSLU), B. Joho, A. Wehinger (enterpriselab), N. Abdennadher, M. Niinimaki (HEPIA)

Minutes: The project, tasks, and possible extension plans were presented.

Enterpriselab promised to prepare a computer (music.enterpriselab.ch) to be used by the art project (done). J. Harboe suggested to ask if it will be possible to run XWCH workers in the HSLU PC’s (desktops used by the HSLU office).

MUSIC face-to-face meeting at hepia 14.3.2012

Present: M. BenBelgacem, M. Niinimaki, N. Abdennadher, H. Hafsi, Y. Durukem (HEPIA), N. Ray, D. Di, G. Giuliani, Ch. Herold, M. Milinkovitch (UNIGE)

Minutes:

N. Abdennadher & M. Niinimaki gave a summary of the milestones and progress of the project.

M. Milinkovitch presented the MetaPIGA task and its stages (gridifying replicates have already been done).

H. Hafsi presented “Combining Grid and Cloud” computing cases. This combination can be/will be used by XWCH applications in the near future. XWCH workers are executed in the Windows Azure platform.

N. Ray et al. presented “Geospatial processing on Desktop Grid”, i.e. the CycloneTrack application on XWCH. There are now 30 computers available at UNIGE for CycloneTrack. There is, too, a WPS mediator service that can use XWCH as a back-end for geospatial processing (alongside LCG).

D. Di presented a human genetic simulation calculation in East Asia, part of which is the Selector application.

Action points: D. Di mentioned some tasks returning no output. This will be debugged in a separate meeting.
